Candlemas, also referred to as Presentation Of The Lord, or Presentation Of Christ inside the Temple, orHypapante, inside the Christian church, competition on February 2, commemorating the occasion whilst the Virgin Mary, in obedience to Jewish law, went to the Temple in Jerusalem both to be purified 40 days after the delivery of her son and to provide Jesus to God as her firstborn (Luke 2:22–38). The pageant changed into formerly known within the Roman Catholic church as the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is now referred to as the Presentation of the Lord. Inside the Anglican church it's far known as the Presentation of Christ inside the Temple. In the Greek church it's far known as Hypapante (meeting), in reference to Jesus’ assembly in the Temple with the aged Simeon.
The earliest reference to the pageant is from Jerusalem, in which inside the overdue 4th century the Western pilgrim Etheria attended its celebration on February 14, 40 days after Epiphany (then celebrated as Christ’s birthday), and wrote of it inside the Peregrinatio Etheriae. It soon unfold to other jap cities, and in 542 Justinian I decreed that its date have to be moved lower back to February 2 (forty days after Christmas). By the middle of the 5th century the custom of gazing the pageant with lighted candles were introduced, and the name Candlemas evolved from this custom. Inside the Western church, Pope Sergius I (687–701) instituted the pageant in Rome. Inside the East it's far broadly speaking a competition of Christ; within the West it turned into mainly a party of the Virgin Mary till the calendar reform of 1969.
